The manufacture of polystyrene starts off as small styrene beads; the beads are exposed to steam. The steam causes the small beads of polystyrene to expand to up to 50 times their original volume. The next step in the process is conditioning. After the beads have expanded they go through a period of maturing, in order to reach an equal pressure and temperature. The beads are then placed into moulds and reheated with steam. The ready-made expanded beads expand further, filling the mould and fusing with one another. Together they now form customised products or blocks. When the process is over, near enough the whole volume of the expanded polystyrene is air (98%) and only 2% of it is polystyrene, which gives it its light weight.
